Kids being kids.

Cheese isn’t in my vocabulary. Don’t get me wrong—I’m a sucker for a slice of brie on some crusty bread. But when it comes to getting kids to smile, dump the dairy!

Some of my repeat photo clients have become dear friends over the years. When we meet, their kids will say something like, “Oh it’s Casey, the funny lady with the camera!” I love to get kids laughing and smiling because they’re enjoying themselves and being enjoyed as well.

A photo shoot is a chore when kids are ordered around: “sit still, smile, put your arms down. Arms DOWN!” During my family photo sessions, families take run-around breaks, do cartwheels, tickle, make faces, say what they love about each other. Kids enjoy being enjoyed, and I think you’ll find that our photo session will be a positive family memory in and of itself.

Do your kids love stuffies? Favorite toys are totally welcome at a photo shoot, and in fact, can help make your child feel comfortable and celebrated.

In the moment a certain shot may seem destined to be an outtake. But you’ll be surprised by which photographs makes you say, “That’s totally us!”
