How to Pick a Photoshoot Time

One question I hear a lot is, “What’s the best time of day for photos?” This is a great question and one that has a few different components.

The first big decision is whether you are shooting outdoors or indoors. If shooting outside, the best time to shoot is about an hour after sunrise or before sunset. This is because the light is softer and the shadows will be prettier. My style of photos are typically backlit or side-lit and sunrise and sunset provides the best opportunity for this. If it’s overcast, it’s not as necessary, but we can’t control that.

If you’re shooting indoors, I love to use window light. While the placement of the windows will matter a lot, I am typically most comfortable doing indoor shoots in the late morning or early afternoon. If you’re planning to use your house, we can chat ahead of time about the rooms you want to use and the window facing directions.

Another factor to consider is your family’s schedule. If your kids typically go to bed at 7, then you may want to schedule a morning photoshoot or a time of year when the sun goes down a bit earlier.

It’s always a dance trying to work with available light and with what works for your family—especially if your kids are young—but I’m committed to making it happen!
